Merry Meet and Welcome!

Merry Meet Again! This blog is called Practical Magic and my aim is to teach spellwork for the beginner witch/wizard! I began my Wiccan path about 20 years ago and have grown ever since in power and strength as a witchy woman! I practice magic as a Solitary Green Witch and work with the powers within herbs, incenses and the essence of Colour in magic. Candle magic is my forte!!

I have a great interest in Animal Totems and my personal totems are the Dog, Gorilla, Raven and Lion. I saw my totem pole in a sacred dream once and have worked with these Power animals ever since. To me, Dog symbolises Loyalty, Gorilla - Benevolence, Raven - Protection and Lion - Strength. There are much more to these Power Animals and I will write a post describing working with the spirit of Totems.

I come from Britain where Animal have been held sacred by the Celts & Druids always alike Native America and Shamans of the Celts would work with their Power Animals as guides. I have a Druid Animal Oracle Deck and if you would like a reading, please get in touch at angelstaroracle@live.co.uk I enjoy reading the cards and this service is FREE!!!

I create crystal healing jewellery under the name of Ravenmoon Designs and my website www.ravenmoondesigns.co.uk has information pages on crystal affinities and astrology.

I hope you find the practice of Wicca as enthralling as I do and what ever your personal path, may you gain wisdom from these pages. Blessings!

A Christian Wiccan prayer....

It came upon the midnight hour
As all were fast asleep
A star shone bright on sleeping babe
With mother looking on
"Lo and behold, I grant to thee
A Messiah is born,
This night of eternity!"

The babe's young eyes
ThaY sparkled bright
Shepherds and lambs
Gathered around
Donkeys baying
With a gentle sound.

How fine this child
Born to save us all
Bringing together
Big and small
Boi and gurl
Old and young
The time of Christ'mas
Has begun!

Let us sing carols
With hearts alight
Sing them morn, noon and night
"Welcome, Welcome little one!"
It is truely now that all has begun
To feel alive
To change the world
To make Us whole
Once more!

Thanks be to Father, Son and Holy Spirit
Thanks be to the Mother Mary
Lets clean Our homes from top to bottom
Mop, sweep and dust
Cleanliness is a must
Before the Lord Our Saviour
And celebrate from daaybreak til dusk
And through the hours of darkness
Sit beside the fire
Mulled Wine in hand
Here starts up the band
Making music into the wee hours
Poinsettia flowers
The jasmine smells divine!
Love between Yours and Mine
Spreads through Christ'mas time
Jump up this day
Lets sing and pray
Lets find forgiveness in Our hearts
For One and all
However big or small
Let Our hearts shine on!

Holy infant
So tender and mild
Mother speaks so softly
To the child
"Happiness comes in small packages"
Bringing glory to All
Let us hear the Angels call!
Amen

The Morrigan's Heart!

The Morrigan's Heart

A Raven Woman true to Her birth
Loving All and creating mirth
Her passion strong
All day and night long
Beneath the Moon
Not a moment too soon
Bringing wisdom to the world
A story to behold
Raven's fly
Through the night sky
Warriors pray for sustenance
Of body and soul!
We drink Red Wine
As the night unfolds
Praising the glory of the Morrigan!
Her heart knows all forgiveness
Strength of Woman
Born to fight for what is right
Born to sing Her song
Hailed from birth
To remember Rebirth
Thanks be to the Morrigan!
She cries tears of blood
At the world We know
She tears at Her hair
To be listened to
Thanks be to the Morrigan!

All woman
Delicate and strong
Knitting and Sewing all day long
With hair long and luscious
Food cooked delicious
Welcome to the new world
Of happiness forseen
For Woman as equal
For Man to cry
Like He should do
Thanks be to the Morrigan!
We drink to your strength
We drink to be merry
We drink to share
And sing of the night
Let there be light!

Blessed Be

The Cailleach of Yuletide

The Cailleach of Yuletide

The Cailleach of Yuletide,
Gnarled and Worn
Boughs breaking under the weight of the snow
Singing songs of an Ancient time
Long, long ago

"She carries rocks in Her apron"
Creating mountain and stream
Holding onto the One Big Dream
Of Life as we know it
All that should be!

A Goddess of many totems
"She protects the animals wild"
Walking with the wolves
Flying with the Raven
Lying with the Bear
Everyone beware!

Lingering awhile at the Loch
Opening the Book
Great winds prevail
Swirling through the valleys
Whirling round the mountains
Storms, snow and hail.

Rain pitter patters down the window pane
Tucked up by the fire
The Cailleach knits and pearls
She weaves the Web of Life
Through all the trouble and strife
She finds peace

The peace of Her heart
Spreads across the World
Happiness Is!
In an apple or pearl
Deep in Her being
She is All Seeing!

 Dancing round the garden
Flowers in Her hair
How mighty is She!
With happiness and glee
Looks after You and Me!

Blessed Be

All Hallows Eve

All Hallows Eve
We do believe
Is full of ghosts and ghoulies
However we truly know
The light doth shine for the Otherworld
For Ancestors to find us in the night
Of All Hallow's Eve!

Witches and Warlocks,
Wizards and Pumpkins galore
Shine the light of Heaven once more
The joys of the world unite and sing
"Glory be to everything,
That cometh from justice,
Truth and honesty,
Blessed Be."

Cometh the night of All Hallows Eve
Trouble and strife
Of yesteryear
Come forth the Spirits of the Ancestors
To bring us glory again
May the Kelts unite
This holy night
To free Our souls of tyranny
May trouble subside
May peace reside
In Our hearts, minds and souls
Welcoming the Golden Age
To bring us dreams come true.
May we feel anew.
Rebirth for the Earth is true!

Blessed Be

To find Our inner magic
From deep within Our hearts and minds
Sprout spells and ritual magic!
The magic literally swirls around
Creating glory in it's path
What will be the aftermath?!

All Hallows Eve
The Ancestors bright
Come hither to be with us on this night
The Kelts of Britain, the knights of old
Have a story to be told
Kind King Arthur and his tribe
Keep this night alive!!
Fighting for what is right
On this most hallowed of night
Beyond the Seventh Seal we send
Those who must make amend
The Veil is thin to all good
Naga gone from Our Heaven!!!
The Otherworld a place of the Ancestors
That once walked these lands
Beautiful Ones with wisdom strong
Knowing what needs to be done
Sending gifts from Heaven above
Flying with wings of a dove
Bring us home to Britain to dwell
Jesus Our Emmanuel!

How the Moon doth shine so bright
Welcoming us to the night
Ana's light!
The Goddess in being
Grandmother Moon
Shining o'er this world
Of happy peeps playing trick or treat
Friends we always meet
On Our journey across the world

Mabon Spirit

Mabon Spirit

As the Autumn comes alive
The leaves begin to take a dive
Magic awakes from deep within
The Earth and us!
Happy days are here again
Joys abound
Plentiful harvest for everyone
Mother Earth's gifts
Pumpkins ready for festival next
Corn for this seems the best
From deep within the magic stirs
Like Ceridwen's cauldron!!
Mixing potions, brews and bakes
Harvest merriment makes
Mabon brings a welcome return
To the magical air of Autumn
You can touch the magic with your heart
Making mindful spells
Bringing ritual to the fore
Rites of Autumnal wealth bore
Blessings of a child forseen
To change the world we know
To that of peace and love!
With the wings of a dove She doth fly
Like toffee She sweetens You & I
Buttercups and Daisies in Her heart
Beauty She doth impart
Dancing through the glen
Awaken the world of men
To all that woman can be
How happy we are to see
A shining star awaken
Twinkling bright
Little starlight!

The Snowflake Fairy

The Snowflake Fairy

I dance, I dance through the sky
Bringing the joy of winter
Bright blessings I bring
To you and your King
Joy everlasting
Wintertime full of light
Snow so bright

My heart is filled with passion
I am overjoyed
Winter's here
The way is clear
We dance through the sky
The time is nigh
For peace on earth
For the Great Mother's Rebirth
Welcome, Welcome Everyone!

Snowflakes fall
Upon us all
To bless us with dainty love
Prancing around
A new world is found
Full of snowmen and white
A cover for the night
The light it brings
Full of ding-a-ling-lings
Has fairies making mirth
The Great Mother's rebirth!

Blessed Be

Lammas Blessings

Lammas Blessings

The Mother Goddess

As we reach the beginning of the harvest and Autumn in it's traditional sense, the Sun ripening the fields of crops and warming our souls, we find the time of the "Mother Goddess".
The sacred site in Britain related to this festival celebration is Silbury Hill in Wiltshire. It symbolised a mother's pregnant womb and embodies fertilty at it's best. The Ancient Druids would journey here at the Lammas time (1st August) and celebrate the Mother Goddess at Her most fertile.

As this is a Mother Goddess celebration, the menfolk would gather together separately and celebrate Lughnasad (LOO-NAS-SAH). This celebration of the Celtic God Lugh, the god of craft, skill and master of many arts, was like the olympic games for menfolk!!
The Celtic God Lugh

Young men especially with the guidace of elders would celebrate together for the moon month. Fathers would be at the Lammas festival celebrating with the Mothers and their children.

In tradition their are many Mother Goddess' celebrated. DEMETER the mother of Persephone is also a Grain Goddess of the harvestime. Her blessed realm would be celebrated at Lammas with dancing and the making of Corn Dollys. The first ear of corn cut from the harvest was made into a Goddess' likeness and kept in the home til next year when it was planted into the fields in spring. This helped to ensure the fertility of the land and a good harvest. A fertilty dance at harvestime would help to celebrate the Mother Earth and the Goddess Ana at her most bountiful.

The sacred symbol for PEACE

Lammas Ritual
As this is the time of the harvest, it is nice to celebrate by making an offering of your harvest to the Mother Earth and the Fae. By leaving this offering you are giving thanks for all the bountiful gifts of the Great Mother. Another possibility is to have a picnic with family and friends celebrating of your harvest. Both aspects, the aspect of give-away and the aspect of enjoying yourself are always welcomed by the Mother Goddess' and the Great Mother Herself.

To quote the Native American Commandments of the Great Spirit:

"Dedicate a share of your efforts to the Greater Good"

Have a fun Litha!

Litha, the Summer Solstice is a time of celebration of the sun's peak, the Sun Lord at full power! This celebration is of the Goddess' DOMNU and the LADY of the LAKE. Both watery Goddess' as DOMNU is the Mother of the Oceans. This aspect of Ana is extremely powerful as Her Lord and if you imagine the Ocean waves you can perceive Her power! It is to Her that tribes living alongside the Ocean pray. Known by many names across the world such as Yemaya in Africa this Goddess has been revered throughout the ages of ,mankind.

Here in Britain there were a tribe of people many moons ago who worshipped Her (Domnu) in great reverence. This tribe, the ancient Irish Fomoire, one of the spiritual ancestry of Britain, revered the Ocean as the giver of Life. They were magical creatures and were the Mer-people and lived in harmony with the Ocean and Domnu. Domnu was born of Chaos and Old-Night, two of the original manifestations of the Lord and Lady's predecessors. Essential and powerful manifestations of the Universe' creation!
For more information on the spiritual ancestry of Britain please see the book by Kathy Jones entitled "Spinning the Wheel of Ana".
( ISBN 1-872983-02-2 and available from www.kathyjones.co.uk )

Litha Ritual

Always goto watery places at this time of year to truly appreciate the Goddess' energy. As Domnu we find her at the ocean's edge and at the Lakeside we find her as Lady of the Lake.
By making offerings to the waters we can honour these two aspects of the Goddess. The offerings can be flowers or floating candles or homemade paper boats (decorated with designs to honour Litha)
Making prayers as we watch these float away to the Goddess for fruitful harvests and fertility, for prosperity and health, for fun and mirth, for happiness and peace.
ENJOY!
Blessed Be.

As the unicorn dances....

As the unicorn dances,
The light begins to swirl,
Minds awakening to the wisdom world,
Innocence and purity,
Clarity brings forgiveness!
Welcome to a world of sparkle,
Gleaming golden horns,
Swishing manes of white.
As the unicorn dances,
The whole world alights!

Bringing peace and love,
Care for nature and the Earth,
Magic and mystery!
Great beings of light,
Shining through the night.
Playing in the forest,
Wild and alive!
Forever souls are shining bright,
Potential for a glorious life!

Angels tread near the unicorn,
Magical beings of the everlasting eras,
Wonder is in our souls!
The unicorn prances into the distance,
The mists twirl around,
Avalon is the sound!
Pipers and horn players,
Harps and drums,
The fae are with us, everyone!

Dancing in the light of the moon,
The time is coming very soon.
When the world will awaken,
Energy flowing,
From Chakras that have laid still,
To reveal a new golden wisdom,
For all to share!
But beware!
There must be cleansing of the world,
To allow this glory to behold!

Welcome to the new world,
Light shining forth,
Angels and Unicorns leading the way!
Light beings of the fifth dimension
Guiding us all
Into the Golden Age!
May you all find this happiness
Filtering through,
May the sky be forever blue!
Blessings of the Unicorn shine in the light!
Be open to their guidance, morn , noon and night!

Blessed Be.

Litha Blessings!

As the summer reaches it's height,
So the birds are put to flight.
Dancing begins at sunset
Goes on til dawn in the heat of the night.
Fires a'burning, music a 'plays
Feeling for more hot, hot days.

Litha spirit fills the air,
Dancing dolphins through the waves,
Seals, the selkies make us aware
Of Domnu's presence at Summer Solstice
Mother of the Oceans brings blessings galore
Fertility, Abundance, Prosperity,
Blessings of a glorious summer to be

As Ana begins to blossom fine
So the flowers fill our mind
Smells of sweet Roses,
Jasmine, Fuschia, Freesia
Drifting on the summer breeze
Fairies come to dance with glee

At Stonehenge there's a frenzy of activity
Druids gather to bless you and me
Dancing, Singing, Music, Fire
Hours of fun to bring in the dawn
Of the summer's height
When the Sun doth shine

Midsummer madness fills the air
Everyone is greeted with a flair
Of happiness and laughter
Warmth of the soul ever after
Drums a 'sounding to the beat
Of summer's wonderful blessed heat!

Let's sound a cheer!
Summer is a comin-in
The sun in His glory
Once again.

The conch shell is sounded
for celebrations to begin
To call a new dawn
Of rising nwyfre in all
The rising dragon.

Fertility abounds,
Great strength of body and mind
Happiness of sunshine and flowers
Green green grass
Animals in oestre.

Rhiannon rides Her white mare
Through the fields and vales
Her lover in her heart
The rising dragon prevails,
Bringing new gifts of love.

The sovereign of the land
Bringing kindness,
making a stand!
For righteousness and life
Beltane is here!

Spring Equinox Blessings!

Spring Equinox Blessings

As the dawn begins to break,
The Earth begins to awake,
To a bright new day
Of flowers blooming
Sunshine creating
A happy day for All!

The Hare brings rebirth
At the dawn
A break to the wintertime
Gentle blessings of new life
A new way of living
A time of forgiving!

Oestre teaches us of fertility
The time of a woman's moon blessing
As girl's become women
Their minds expand
Their bodies bloom
Their world's change!

As Ostara brings new fertility to Earth
So the garden blooms to colours
Of yellow, lilac and white
Of orange, red and purple,
Iris, Daffodil, Crocus,
Tulips and Violets!

The carpet of flowers
Brings the April showers
Gentle rains to bless the Earth
To help bring about rebirth
Lush new growth
Spring Equinox Blessings!

IMBOLC Poem

As the blessed Spring arrives,
Flowers such as snowdrop grow,
Deep beneath the white clean snow.
Bridie, the Maiden pure and bright
Doth sing this blessed Imbolc night
Dancing through the gardens fair
To hasten blooms everywhere
Little bells do twinkle in the morn
Her copper mirror shines with the sun,
Bringing glory to everyone!

Around the holy spring and sacred well
Bride sings Her happy tale
Of healing fine o'er hill and dale
Gathering to celebrate
We do prayer ties make
Hoping for a brighter day
Singing and dancing 'ere so gay
With the colours white, yellow, pink
Pastels do our minds make think
Of the brightness of the Spring
Light and life in everything!

Brigdhe, the Maiden of Smithcraft
Brings to us Her sacred art
Casting metal in the forge
Creating from the elements
Of fire and earth
Water and Air
Beautiful creations abound
Birds sing all around
Beginning their year of nesting time
Spring-cleaning at yours and mine!

Hare, the Spirit of the Spring
Doth gentle rebirth bring
Renewing all they touch
Free they run
Through the fields
Flying with the moon
And shining with the Sun.
Merlin doth shapeshift to hare
Spreading His magic everywhere.
Let us learn to magic make
And bring happiness in our wake.

The Eagle too brings Springtime blessings
Glory, light and spirit strong
Soaring o'er the mountains all day long
Wings spread far to hold our heart
Love to us the eagle doth impart
Teaching of guidance of the soul
Spirituality will call
To everyone both big and small
Help the eagle will always bring
To those who are ready to sing!

Thank you Great Goddess for the Spring
For light and life and everything
For joy and happiness
Flower and tree
Filling the gardens of you and me
Renewal abounds for all to find
Within the soul, body and mind
Great are the days of shining sun
The year truly has begun!

Blessed Be

Animal Totems - The spirit of the Cat

Cats are familiars to us witches!!!
They are beautiful creatures of secrecy, mystery, magic and delight!
They fly with us on our broomsticks through the skies to protect and guide us through the night. At night they come into their own lurking in the shadows to pop out and say hello!
In the day they bask in the sun like Lions their larger friends of the jungle.
So what can we learn from Cats?

Magic is mysterious
Secrets are to be kept
Within mystery lies deep truths that lead to inner wisdom
Delight in the senses for much can be gleamed for our knowledge
Look deep into the shadows of your own heart to find your true self
If you are scared by what you find there pray for guidance from the Cat who is good to help with shadows of many kinds.

There are many kinds of Cat, all of us will know our little friends who live with us!
It is they I speak of above, however there are many other "big" cats who still hold cat wisdom.

JAGUAR - being a Cat the familiar of the Goddess and close to the Moon as She be of the night, Jaguar Woman! She be of dream and keeps temple like a priestess!
Deep in the jungle She knows the best tracks to follow and knows how to stalk with stealth.
I have a wonderful CD album called "Temple of the Dream Jaguar" and just listening you are guided to a whole new realm of tranquility and rest.

LIONESS - the huntress of the pride She provides for Her male Lion and Her cubs. First to defend Her world and to lead the pride to new grounds and for water.
Sensing danger always and knowing of the wisdom of how to protect from it!
The Lioness woman finds power in the Sun and will be rarely seen at night when She keeps secretive.

TIGRESS - A Goddess of power, the Tigress Woman knows Her world well.
She hides away in secret worlds from mankind.
She knows Her enemy and Her friend.
She looks to the day and night equally hence her stripes of orange gold and black.
Often seen at sunset!

PANTHER - A Lady of the night! Keeping away all fright!
Loves deep jungle to hide away
Seems so careful Her friends say.
Looks to birds above in the trees
For signs of news of approaching enemies!

LEOPARD - The most careful cat of all it's said
Whose quite happy to make their bed
In distant lands hidden from human's eye
Climbing is their forte
To stay away from all that's naughty!

All these aspects of the big cats can be seen in our own little furry friends. It is wise to learn as much as you can about your familiars before you ever venture near one.
Friends they are but remember wild they are too!!!
Cats are kindly creatures but will soon be disheartened if you keep too distant.
Make a friend of your familiar and they'll be your friends back!
Welcome to the magical world of the CAT!
Blessings
